The railway behind and closest to the train station (museum now, also
known as Historic Society), was originally owned by the Erie-North East
Rail Road, the first railway in Erie County, which was completed in
1853.
In 1869 this railway became the Lakeshore-Michigan Southern Railway,
which in turn became part of the New York Central Rail Road in 1914. In
1968 the New York Central became part of Penn Central, which was bought
by Conrail in 1976. The frame station first served as a freight and
passenger station for North East. At this time it was on the site of
the museum station and was then moved to its present location in 1899.
It is used for storage.
The frame station known as the "Nickel Plate Station", was built in or
about 1882, when the Nickel Plate Rail Road was built through North
East. In 1964 the Nickel PLate Railway merged with Norfolk and Western. |
