Polygonal Barns, though rare in eastern Pennsylvania, can be found in limited quantities in western Pennsylvania. They are a subset of the "round" barn. The A.W. Butts Barn constructed in 1879 and is a landmark in North East Township. Its brick construction makes this building an even rarer example of this resource type, such that it was documented by the Historic American Building Survey (HABS) in 1933. Like most barns, its upper floor was used for hay and wagon storage, its lower floor used for livestock. The building was also used for grape production. Barns such as this gained popularity as progressive farming techniques were employed in the mid 1800s. The building required less construction materials and thus could be less expensive to build. It could also withstand heavy winds.
