HISTORIC OVERVIEW OF THIS STYLE |
The Jamesway Dairy Barn was introduced during the Great Depression. These barns are sometimes called Gothic roof barns or rainbow roof barns, but the more common label is that of its most popular brand sold by the Jamesway Company. The key feature of the barn is its arched or pointed arch roof. The barn shown here is located at 3660 Brown Road in Greene Township.
Other features of Jamesway barns repeat the general features of the second phase of Wisconsin barns. On the interior, factory-produced laminated curved rafters support the metal roofing. Rails attached onto the rafters were used to transport hay and straw down the length of the barn. The lower level featured two ranks of stanchions where the heads of the cows were secured during milking. By this time, vacuum-powered milking equipment were generally universal in Pennsylvania in new barns.
